December Update

Monthly status update:  I have no idea when the next release will be ready.  I'm guesstimating spring or summer at the moment.

K, that's out of the way.  I haven't worked on the game much at all this month.  I've mainly just been enjoying my break, re-reading comments, daydreaming about the game, oh, and actually PLAYING some other porn games.  I've found a few I really like too.  I'll puts some links at the bottom of this post if you're curious.

On the upside, the new computer is up & running.  On paper, it's much faster than the old machine, and in many places it really shines.  However, when it comes time to save my work, it takes forever.  At this point I have to assume there's a bug somewhere that's causing Adobe to hang, or perhaps the virus scanner is going crazy & scanning every block before it allows a write.  Whatever it is, I can see that one processor (or core) is running flat out for minutes at a time, while the rest of the machine sits idle.  I guess Adobe needs to multi-thread the save function?  Frustrating, because I can literally copy the entire .fla file in 5 seconds, but Adobe takes upwards of 5 minutes to save the thing.  What's it doing?

I have been tinkering with something however.  Let me attach a picture below.  See if you can figure it out.  ;P

It's not done yet, but yeah, I'm working on alternate color schemes for each of the characters.  Eventually I hope to have a slider bar so you can make your own color combos as well.  Learning to code this has been both fun & incredibly frustrating.  I'll probably rant about it later.  I like the results, but let's just say that Actionscript2 does not handle setting colors well (imo).

This has also served as a nice time to go back & clean up my lines & such.  The hero sprites were some of the first things I drew for the game, which means there was a lot of draw-erase-draw-erase going on.  It's amazing to me how overly complex some of the curves are because of this.  I'll see what looks like a simple curve, but upon close inspection I'll discover it's being defined by 50 points (should be like 3 or 4).  So, I've been fixing that too.  There's a (small) chance that this will result in a faster game for those of you on older PC's, but mainly this is just about me optimizing where I can.  Damn you OCD!!!

OCD: "You know, you should really set her eyebrow color too"

Me: "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU"

So, what have I been playing you ask?  Let me start with Dusty's Castle.  As far as I know, it's the first game that's ever been finished on the LoK forums, so a big congrats to Gorepete.  Gorepete also added a color slider just before the game was done, which pretty much inspired me to try & do my own.  So I reckon that's a double thanks I owe him.

The next game I'm playing is all Japanese.  The only text I can read says Hikaru Senki, which seems to be what folks are calling it.  I call it 'train your Pokemon to be a rapist', which doesn't quite flow off the tongue so well, but leaves little doubt about the gameplay.  Anyway, I was shocked at how much fun it was.  Game boils down to collecting shit & sexing up enemies.  If you're interested, follow this link.  Be sure to scroll down & read all the menu translations, as you'll need to know how to equip & swap weapons & such.

And the last link I'm going to post is a game called pretty warrior may cry.  Other than the 3D, this is almost exactly what I wanted to do for my next game.  So needless to say, playing this was a surreal experience.  It was like playing a game plucked from my dreams, described to someone over the phone, who doesn't actually speak English.  So yeah, I loved it.  No promises you get the same experience.  ;)

Til next time

  1. Are you saving the file as CS4 or CS5? CS5 are usually smaller, so I recommend you to convert to.

  2. CS3. I'm behind the times, remember? ;) Although when I do a search for 'slow saves in Flash', I get tons of hits for CS5, and no mention at all of CS3. You sure CS5 is actually better?

  3. Saves: turn off optimization and 'Save Compressed" until you have something ready for release, THEN save with all the good stuff turned on. Working files might be larger than final, but you save a heap of time.

CS3 is the last version Adobe did halfway right. CS5 is a bloated, stinkin' caracass of non-compatible. "You WILL do it our way," crap. They tried to wedge "Mobile! At any cost, Mobile!" into it, and screwed up horribly.

  4. TAKE CARE ! ADOBE IS ACTUALLY ON THE FIRE ! A monstruous security's breach was done with the last update. My fiance just got hacked and had to reinstall everything after having cleaned his computer. So if yours is slow and has problems with adobe, I would advise you to check everything.

They did a big shit with their last update, really ! That's worse and worse ! I already had compatibility problems with the precedent one but this last one is impressive.

Anyway, have nice holidays and enjoy the feasts ! :D

  5. I have a question about one of the game links you posted. When I tried to open the application for the pokemon game about half way through loading, I get an error message that just says ????. Do you know what might be the problem?

  8. @MiddayDreaamer There's several tricks you have to do to run Japanese games, and I'm not sure which one you need. You probably simply need to enable Japanese characters, but it may be more than that. I'd do a google search on 'running Japanese games' and 'applocale', that should get you started in the right direction (also check the ULMF forums, they should have a sticky post on it somewhere). As wankxxd pointed out, you may also need one of the many flavors of of RPG player. Try searching for 'RPGXP' or 'RTP103'.

@wankxxxd What kaspa40k said, plus use the worm monster.

@everyone - Happy Holidays, & cya next year! (Thanks for the reminder Sibyllina ;)

  11. Hello :)

First off DC, I love this game. It runs great and its a lot of fun. I am able to play it on my android phone, which is awesome, because in my work I rarely get to be near a PC. Anyways I am upgrading soon and my new phone wont have a QWERTY and this causes a problem. On the flash player for android, you can hit down but not down and forward at the same time, thus making the game impossiable to play. Would it be possiable to make double tapping down, a crouch lock until you hit up? I would love you forever if you could implament that with the next release. I point many android users here because the game runs so well, but atm only those of us with QWERTYs can play. Thank you so much for your game, you do amazing work!

  12. Still very much enjoying this game DirtyC101!

A couple of suggestions that I'd love to see, but this game could use some kind of gallery mode, perhaps for enemies you've defeated only, or unlocked by a code. Basically so we can view scenes as desired, since if a player is doing well at the game then it's very easy to miss a lot of them.

Secondly, I think that a lot of the animations could be sped up some by dropping some frames here and there, as many sex-scenes feel a tiny bit slow. In particular though the crawling speed is very slow, and the run could be faster still. Not wanting to sound critical (after all, who am I to be?) it just needs a bit more speed to make navigation easier, and make some of the sex scenes a little more intense.

Lastly, not a suggestion, but just curious if multi-enemy animations are in the works for some of the other areas? Currently only pirates and zombified crew seem to work, but there are plenty of enemies on the planet itself!

    Keep up the great work!

  13. @Flare - I didn't think the game worked on smart phones. I can see how it could work with a slide out keyboard, but I don't see how it could work with only a touch screen. Even if I changed the crawling mechanic, how would you input attacks (letters A, S, & D) without a keyboard?

Clearly I need to get myself a Droid & see for myself... ;P

@Renara - Are you the same Renara who runs LoK? Howdy! Didn't expect to see you here. =)

Most of your questions/comments have already been addressed in the posts over the last month. Crawling will be reduced, game will run faster, and the new monsters will have double teams. Or at least, that's the plan right this moment anyway. haha. Thanks for coming by & posting your comments though, always appreciated.

  14. Yep it's Renara from LoK!

I have some thoughts on invincibility when leaving a grapple actually:
    - Instead of invincibility, what about changing the swarming behaviour of the enemies? Basically, if the player is grappled, then only enemies that can join the grapple will continue to approach, otherwise they'll hang back. For example, if there are three zombified crew, and the player is grappling one, then only one, then of the two remaining only the closest will keep moving forward, while the furthest hangs back. This way you don't get the same clustering problem that can quickly overwhelm the player, but you can still risk further grapples if you're not careful.
    - Secondly, I think that being bounced out of a grapple when armour is removed is a bit disruptive. Perhaps a better way might be to have a bonus escape option appear when armour is removed, this would flash up for a second or two, and hitting any attack button will allow the player to escape for free, otherwise they can just continue with the grapple as normal.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to your next update!

  15. Love your second idea there. Unfortunately I don't think I can change the way armor saves work without re-writing a LOT of code. I'll look into it though, I think it would make the grapples a lot more fun.
    Thanks

  16. @DirtyC101- On the droid if you search for flash player in the droid market, there is a free one. When you view flash files using it, there is a directional pad controller on the left, and like 6 buttons on the right, 3-4 of them you can assign letters, numbers or symbols. Your game definatly works on droid. I have a droid 2, and its not 60fps, but it moves smoothly enough (wway more so than any other flash game like it) and I love to play it. Keep up the good work, and if you need some android beta testing, let me know ;)
